Let the Northern Lights Erase Your Name Journal 1

After reading the first two sections assigned, I have really enjoyed reading the book. It is an easy read and not hard to understand which is always what I like. I have also taken a huge interest in the plot of the story because it is suspenseful which has caused me to not want to stop reading. I found the second section of the book to be extremely interesting when her mom started talking to an old friend again. It seemed extremely weird that this woman would have one best friend for awhile and then all of a sudden want nothing to do with them and then just totally disappear. It seems almost as if she can only take someone for so long and then gets tired of them and bored of their attention. It shocked me how many people feel for her trap because I know I would surely not. If someone is suppose to be a true friend and always there for you, why would you want to just leave them and totally block them out of your life? It is extremely bazaar. I am really not a big fan of Clarissa’s mom because I do not get how she just seems to not pay any attention to her children and can have random flings with other men. Like Mr. Wells for example, how could she kiss him right in the backyard of her house and then act like everything was ok. It just does not make sense especially because Clarissa’s mom had to have known that Clarissa saw the entire incidence occur as well as the t-shirt that Mr. Wells gave her flapping around in the garden on their scarecrow. The one thing that really seemed to make me mad was when Clarissa was a little late getting back to their meeting spot in the mall and her mom did not wait for her and disappeared for life. Why would any mother leave their daughter alone at the mall by themselves and not answer their phone. What happens if someone would have taken Clarissa or if her dad was unable to pick her up? Clarissa could have been taken by someone else or left at the mall, alone for awhile. If her mom wanted to leave and disappear, she should have chosen another time to make the escape. When it came to the part in the book when one of Clarissa’s so called friends tried to convince her to sleep with a boy at the age of 16, I was in shock. I was scared that Clarissa was going to at first but at least her mom was worth-full to give her some advice. It actually made me laugh when Clarissa pocked the boy in the eyes…he deserved it!! It surprised me at the end of the section that Clarissa and her friend were allowed to drive to San Antonio for awhile and see Mr. Wells. It shocked me that both of their parents allowed them to travel so far at such a young age. I know my parent’s would have for sure not let me. It also surprised me to see how Clarissa did not seem to be scared of anything. She traveled to San Antonio to speak with a guy who she barely new as well as run away at the age of 30 and travel to an entirely different country to meet the guy who she thinks is her father. She really had no plan and no previous reservations other than a set idea in mind for meeting her father. When Clarissa was in the church where her father was a priest, I felt like I was unable to relate with this religion. For one, I had never heard of it and two, my beliefs do not focus on the family as the soul idea. When Clarissa walked out of the church because she did not want to take communion, I felt like I became mad at her for not staying till the end of the service to talk to him. I guess I was expecting her to just either hide or wait till the end of the service to talk to him and introduce herself. However, at the end of the section when she called him up, it made me happier that she would finally meet him for the first time.

I am interested to see what your thoughts are concerning certain characters after having read more of the book. The unfolding of the narrative has really helped me see the actions of the central characters as at least understandable.

Thanks for always being a top notch student. It's good to have you back.
